My Daily Pig Farm Routine – What It Really Takes
“Discover the real daily
routine of a pig farmer – from feeding and cleaning to monitoring pig health
and record keeping. Learn simple, practical tips to manage your pig farm
successfully.”
When people hear that I am into pig farming, many imagine it’s just
feeding pigs and waiting to sell them. But the truth is, running a pig farm is
a full-time commitment that requires consistency, care, and patience. Today, I
want to share what my daily routine looks like on the farm — the small things
that keep my pigs healthy and my project growing.
Morning Routine
1.
Checking on the pigs – The
first thing I do is walk through the pig houses to see if all pigs are active,
eating, and behaving normally. A quiet or weak pig is usually a sign something
is wrong.
2.
Cleaning – I sweep and wash the pens.
Clean pens prevent diseases and make the pigs more comfortable.
3.
Feeding – Each group of pigs (piglets,
growers, sows) gets its special feed ration. I make sure they have enough clean
water too.
4.
Monitoring – I check if the pigs are
resting well, especially during hot weather. Pigs can get heat stress, so I
make sure there’s good ventilation and sometimes sprinkle water to cool them
down.
5.
Record keeping – I note down how much feed was
used, the growth progress, or anything unusual I noticed. These records help me
track costs and make decisions later.
Evening Routine
- Second
feeding – I give the pigs their evening meal and
ensure water troughs are not empty.
- Final
check – Before closing for the day, I inspect all
pens again. A pig can fall sick or get injured anytime, so spotting early
is important.
- Planning – I
review what’s needed tomorrow: feed mixing, cleaning supplies, or health
checks.
Lessons I’ve Learned
- Consistency is key –
pigs thrive when they eat and drink at regular times.
- Cleanliness saves money –
preventing disease is cheaper than treating it.
- Observation is everything –
the more time I spend watching my pigs, the better I understand them.
Final Thoughts
Pig farming is not just about waiting for profits. It’s about daily
effort, discipline, and love for the animals. Each small task adds up to
healthy pigs and a successful farm.
So if you are thinking of starting pig farming, remember: your daily
routine will determine your success.
