Pig Feed Ingredients Explained: Energy, Protein, Vitamins & Minerals

A good pig diet isn’t about mixing anything available — it’s about choosing the right ingredients that provide energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Here’s a farmer-friendly breakdown of what each category includes — and why they matter. Let’s break it down:

1. Energy Sources

Energy feeds form the bulk of pig diets (60–70%). They help pigs gain weight, stay warm, and stay active.

Common energy ingredients:

  • Maize Germ – Rich in carbohydrates, boosts growth.
  • Rice Bran / Rice Germ – Adds energy and natural oil for shiny skin.
  • Wheat Bran – Energy + fiber, aids digestion.
  • Sorghum (mtama) – Good energy source, cheaper than maize in some areas.
  • Cassava Chips/Flour – Cheap energy, but must be dried well to avoid poisoning.
  • Sweet Potato Vines & Tubers – Provide energy and vitamins, often used by small farmers.
  • Molasses – Sweet liquid energy booster, should be used in small amounts.

2. Protein Sources

Young pigs, growers, and lactating sows especially need high protein.

Animal protein ingredients:

  • Fish Meal – Best protein source, improves growth and fertility.
  • Meat Meal / Blood Meal – High protein, but must be well processed to avoid disease.

Plant protein ingredients:

  • Sunflower Seed Cake – Affordable and widely available protein.
  • Copra (Coconut Cake) – Protein + oil for energy.
  • Soybean Meal – High-quality plant protein, great for piglets.
  • Cottonseed Cake – Good protein, but should be used carefully (contains toxins if not well processed).
  • Groundnut Cake (Peanut Meal) – High protein, but can carry aflatoxin if not stored well.
  • Lucerne (Alfalfa) / Desmodium – Legume forages with protein and vitamins, good for supplementing.

3. Minerals

Even in small amounts, minerals are critical for bone growth, reproduction, and general health.

  • Bone Meal – Rich in calcium and phosphorus.
  • DCP (Di-Calcium Phosphate) – Excellent phosphorus source.
  • Lime (Calcium Carbonate) – Supplies calcium.
  • Salt – Improves appetite, balances fluids.
  • Oyster Shells – Natural calcium source.

4. Additives & Supplements

These support overall health and performance.

  • Lysine & Methionine – Essential amino acids for growth.
  • Toxin Binders – Prevent aflatoxin poisoning.
  • Vitamin Premix – Boosts immunity and fertility.
  • Enzymes (optional) – Improve digestion of fiber in young pigs.

The right ingredients = the right results!
