From Piglet to Market: Understanding Pig Growth Stages

Farming is a journey, and every stage matters. From piglet to market, success comes from paying attention to the details.

Every successful pig farmer knows that raising pigs is more than just feeding them until they are ready for sale. Each stage of a pig’s life has unique needs, challenges, and opportunities. Understanding these growth stages helps farmers provide the right care, nutrition, and environment for healthy pigs and better profits.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through the main stages of pig growth — from piglet to market — and what you should focus on at each step.

1. Piglet Stage (Birth to 8 Weeks)

  • Focus: Health, warmth, and nutrition.
  • Newborn piglets are very delicate. They need warmth, colostrum (the mother’s first milk), and protection from diseases.
  • At about 2 weeks, they can start creep feeding (small amounts of solid feed) while still suckling.
  • Deworming and iron supplements are important at this stage.

Tip: Keep the piglet pen warm and clean to prevent stress and infections.

2. Weaner Stage (8 to 20 Weeks)

  • Focus: Transition from milk to solid feed.
  • Weaned piglets must adjust to eating on their own. A balanced starter feed rich in protein (18–20%) is key for fast growth.
  • This is also the stage where you need to watch out for diarrhea and other stress-related illnesses.

Tip: Provide clean water at all times and gradually introduce new feed to avoid digestive upsets.

3. Grower Stage (20 to 50 Kg / 10 to 16 Weeks)

  • Focus: Steady growth and muscle development.
  • Pigs at this stage need a diet with good protein (16–18%) and energy to grow strong bones and muscles.
  • Housing should be spacious, with good airflow and hygiene.

Tip: Keep records of feed intake and growth to track performance.

 4. Finisher Stage (50 to 90+ Kg / 16 Weeks to Market)

  • Focus: Building body mass for market.
  • Protein levels can be slightly reduced (14–16%), while energy is increased to add body weight.
  • This is the most feed-intensive stage, as pigs eat more and convert feed into meat.

Tip: Avoid overfeeding protein at this stage — it’s costly and unnecessary. Focus on balanced finishing diets.

5. Market Ready (5–6 Months Old)

  • Most pigs reach market weight between 90–110 kg at around 5 to 6 months.
  • At this point, the goal is to sell when feed costs are still profitable compared to pig weight gain.
  • Delaying too long means spending more on feed without much increase in profit.

Final Thoughts

Pig farming becomes easier when you understand the different growth stages. Each stage — piglet, weaner, grower, and finisher — requires specific care, feeding, and management. By meeting these needs, you’ll raise healthy pigs, reduce losses, and make better profits at the market.
